Matthews Quarries is an Australian company that was established in 1986. It currently delivers over 500,000 tonnes of material annually. Owner Rob Matthews focuses on pairing highly skilled operators with leading-edge equipment as a key part of the company’s success. This led Rob to purchase an XMOR® BHB80 5.9 m³ bucket for his new Volvo EC750E.
“It’s saving us money. The XMOR® BHB80 bucket fitted to our Volvo 750 Excavator is doing at least 10 percent more than what our previous 75-tonne Volvo was doing with a standard bucket, so it’s proving itself,” Rob Matthews told Quarry Magazine in an article dated January 9, 2025.
Rob went on to say that the bucket is loading in overburden of mostly clay and dirt, which means the bucket is lasting well and has required no maintenance. The cycle times have also seen a dramatic improvement; whereas their traditional buckets required five full loads to fill a truck, the XMOR® bucket has reduced that to three.
As a result, the haul trucks are now fully utilized, eliminating waiting times to be loaded by the excavator. This has also improved fuel efficiency and had a positive impact on labor cost per ton.
“Saving fuel versus the production rate makes it quicker and cheaper. If it’s still going as strong as it is now in another 12 months’ time, it’ll be leaps and bounds ahead. When we buy another excavator, we’ll definitely be looking at XMOR® again.”
